At a time in our country’s history where the economy is shaky, troops are over-seas, States are going bankrupt, housing market has declined to near record proportions, it seems that interest in politics/elections has increased all around the country. Like many states, Nevada had its primary elections a few weeks ago. Given the many governmental issues that effect our communities, we are pleased to have the opportunity to have as our in-studio guest this week, Mr Kenneth Wegner, candidate for Nevada’s First Congressional District. Mr. Wegner also ran for this same seat in 2006 & 2008.
Below is only five of the many positions that Mr. Wegner plans on addressing if elected to Congress. These five will be addressed in more detail during his time on VEGAS UNWRAPPED. We encourage you to go to Mr. Wegner’s website to read about his position on the other issues listed below. Click on www.wegnerforcongress.com to learn more about Mr. Wegner’s views.

Campaign Issues From Kenneth Wegner
Candidate For the United States House of Representatives
State of Nevada
KENNETH WEGNER
US Jobs
“American prospers only when Americans prosper. To create jobs and maintain or increase our high standard of living, government must promote wise investment in people, equipment, facilities and infrastructure, not discourage it. Lowering taxes of all types would make more private sector money available for the investment that creates jobs, and a sensible regulatory and policy environment will allow companies to grow and create jobs.
Institute a 10% Corporate Tax – American companies move production overseas and foreign companies do not move here in large part because our corporate tax rate is the highest in the developed world. A reduced, competitive corporate tax rate would help make America one of the best places in the world to invest and do business in. That would mean economic growth and lots of new American jobs.
Promote Sensible Regulations – While some laws and regulations may be useful, many are simply expensive, time-consuming, bureaucratic burdens that make our companies non-competitive and drive them overseas to places where doing business is easier. Reasonable, business-friendly laws and regulations will encourage them to invest in America, do business in America, and hire American workers.
Government must “Buy American” – All new federal government contracts must be mandated to buy made in the USA products, with the requirement that all employees must have health insurance in order to bid on these contracts. More importantly, military spending is a huge part of our national budget, and a military “Buy American” program would create American jobs by increasing demand for American-produced goods and services while at the same time serve a vital national security interest by assuring that we always have the capability of producing everything our military needs to function”.
Budget
To produce wealth and pay off our current government debt, individuals, businesses and our government must invest and become more productive, not wastefully consume. An essential part of this is a balanced federal budget, one that would – without accounting trickery – spend only as much as it takes in. America desperately needs to re-learn the difference between needs and mere wants, for we cannot perpetually print money and issue debt in order to consume more than we can afford. Only by prioritizing and limiting spending in an apolitical manner will America avoid sovereign bankruptcy.
Tax Reform
“These days taxes are always going up. Indeed, when all taxes are combined, an average American pays nearly half of their income to government at some level. And while some taxes fund truly essential and Constitutional government services, unnecessary taxes undermine Americans’ efforts to support their families, charities and churches. Knowing that money left in the hands of the people who earned it is always the money most wisely spent, the Founders, in the Constitution, demanded that taxes be minimal and administered evenly. For the sake of America’s economic solvency, the current tax code must be eliminated.
Institute a 10% Flat Income Tax – All citizens have an obligation to equally support the Constitutional functions of government. A simple, flat tax would do this while eliminating the political favoritism that permeates our current unjust system of taxes and deductions that benefits some people at the expense of others. And with current tax compliance expenses exceeding the amount of taxes collected, a flat tax would be enormously more efficient.
Institute a 10% Import Duty – Taxing all imports equally and at a low rate is how the Founders originally funded government, and duties served us well in lieu of an income tax for more than a century. Now, some imports are punished with shocking duties, while other imports pay nothing. Government should stop distorting markets, levy a reasonable duty on all imports equally, and use that money to retire our national debt.
Institute a 10% Corporate Tax – To corporations, taxes and tax compliance costs are simply business expenses that are passed on to consumers through higher prices. This both reduces our standard of living and makes American products and services uncompetitive in world markets. Lower taxes would reduce costs and so encourage companies to remain in or move to America and hire American workers.”
“We can repair our tax system by:
Replacing the complicated income tax system with a 10 percent flat income tax, allowing a $3,000 exemption for each dependent living in the USA;
Instituting a national sales tax of 2 percent to supplement the general fund; and imposing a 10 % import value-added tax exclusively to pay off the national debt. We need to eliminate the confusing and unfair graduated tax system and create incentives for businesses and people to work and create wealth. The corporate tax needs to be reduced to 10% to make America internationally competitive.”
Energy
We import much of our energy from other countries, and in doing so become dependent on some that are not as friendly or politically stable as we would like. Government energy policies can work to deter energy imports and promote domestic energy production. The reliable and cost-effective energy that results will fuel jobs, economic growth and maintain our high standard of living.
- Develop Domestic Energy Resources – While America produces far more oil, coal and natural gas than most people think, there is still much more to be had. Nevertheless, most mining and energy companies find it uneconomical to produce more here because of high taxes and excessive regulation. Government should promote domestic energy production and the jobs and independence it would create, with at the same time maintaining the integrity of our environment.
- Promote Alternative Energy – Though “green” sources will be an important part of our future energy mix, direct industry subsidies would short-circuit the magic of the free market that would otherwise best develop these resources and technologies. Instead, sensible policies and regulations should promote private-sector development of alternative energy so that it becomes efficient enough to make economic sense.
- Build Nuclear Reactors – “Green” energy is a nice thought, but for now it cannot provide enough energy to maintain our standard of living. While green technology and infrastructure develops, America should as a stop-gap encourage nuclear energy, an existing technology that already safely, economically and relatively greenly powers much of the world. Unfortunately, here it takes two decades and billions of dollars to site, permit and build a new reactor. Government should streamline this process.
Education
“Federal support for education in the form of block grants should be given directly to the states’ school districts. Let the state school boards decide how this money should be spent to improve education.”
